RECYCLING STATION

The Gateway School has a Recycling Station on the property. It is located behind the buildings, on the western side of the school. A Recycling Programme is run by committee members, teachers, parents and learners. At present only plastic and paper are being collected and sold to a Recycling Company.

PAPER

  • White office paper
  • Magazines and books (as long as nothing is laminated)
  • Newspaper
  • Cardboard (boxes and cereal boxes)

Paper

High grade paper includes:

  • All white office paper
  • White invoices
  • White envelopes including window envelopes
  • School books - covers removed please (this is a big help).
  • Telephone and other accounts
  • Shredded white paper

Common mix includes:

  • Brightly coloured paper
  • Soft cardboard, for example: cereal boxes, egg boxes
  • Gift wrapping
  • Fax paper
  • Brown envelopes

Other paper products:

Newspaper and telephone directories (please remove glossy ads, these go into a separate igloo)
Magazines, glossy fliers and adverts all have their own igloo.

The following CANNOT be recycled:

  • Laminated or waxy paper
  • Punch confetti
  • Carbon paper
  • Stickers

PLASTICS

Plastics are made from oil, a non-renewable resource, and a great deal of the plastic packaging we use daily is recyclable. Ice cream and milk containers, fabric softener bottles, plastic bags and even cling-wrap can all be recycled.

  • The effortless way to determine whether a plastic product is recyclable or not is by looking for its recycling logo. There are seven plastic recycling logos and most plastic packaging is imprinted with one of them. The logos tell you what type of plastic a container is made of. Each type has to be separately recycled.

The Station takes the following items:

Plastic:

  • 1 and 2 litre milk bottles - clean, tops discarded and flattened please
  • 2 litre Coke bottles, labels removed, lids discarded and flattened please.
  • Oil, spring water, Energade, Sunlight dishwashing liquid bottles etc. - all with a "dimple" underneath.
  • Only number 2 plastic, for example: shampoo, fabric softener etc. (the 2 must be shown in a recycling triangle)
  • All soft plastic bags - clean please
  • PET 1 - Plastic containers

No cellophane please.

OBJECTIVES ACHIEVED THROUGH THE RECYCLING PROGRAMME

  • An awareness to help saving our planet
  • Caring for its resources
  • Managing our own environment
